TRIBUN-TIMUR.COM, SIDRAP — The 10th of Muharram in Sidrap Regency is not only synonymous with voluntary fasting or the tradition of buying items believed to bring blessings. Some residents also take advantage of the occasion to hold prayers for the safety of newly purchased vehicles. This tradition, which has been passed down through generations, is still found in several areas of Sidrap. This was evident at a residence in Batulappa Village, Watang Pulu District. The community usually prepares various traditional Bugis foods and cakes as part of the communal prayer procession or tawassul, known as sennu-sennungeng. One such activity is carried out by Haslindah, a Sidrap resident who recently purchased a car on the 10th of Muharram. He prepared a number of traditional foods such as onde-onde, sawella, bandang, sokko, and eggs to be used in the vehicle's safety prayer procession. The food was placed inside the car before a religious teacher led the recitation of prayers for safety and blessings. After the series of prayers were completed, the procession continued with sprinkling water on the tires and engine of the vehicle as a symbol of hope that the vehicle would be protected from disaster and be used safely. This ritual is an expression of gratitude to Allah SWT and a prayer that the vehicle will bring benefits and safety. The practice of sprinkling water on a new vehicle is also often combined with dhikr (remembrance of God) and prayer. Culturally, this is interpreted as a symbol of self-purification and a request for protection from various dangers while driving. Ustaz Arafah said that some people still consider the 10th of Muharram to be an inauspicious day. In fact, in Islamic history, this date is known as a day full of blessings and safety for the prophets. "Many people still consider the 10th of Muharram to be an unlucky day, but in fact, many of our prophets were saved by Allah on the 10th of Muharram," Ustaz Arafah told Tribun-Timur.com, Thursday evening (June 25, 2026). He explained that various narrations mention a number of major events that occurred on the day of Ashura, or the 10th of Muharram. Among them, Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) was saved by Allah SWT from the pursuit of Pharaoh and his army while crossing the Red Sea. Furthermore, Prophet Noah (peace be upon him) was also said to have been saved from the great flood when his ark anchored after the floodwaters receded. Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) was saved from the flames of King Nimrod, while Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him) was released from the belly of a whale after begging Allah SWT for forgiveness. "These events demonstrate that the 10th of Muharram is a day full of mercy and help from Allah. Therefore, Muslims are encouraged to increase their good deeds, pray, give alms, and show gratitude," he said. The sennu-sennungeng tradition, which still persists among the Sidrap community, is a form of acculturation of Bugis cultural values ​​and Islamic teachings. Besides strengthening family ties, this tradition also serves as a reminder that every blessing received, including a new vehicle, should begin with gratitude and prayer to Allah SWT.
