Лекция Анастасии Прошутинской и Анны Козониной «Танец и перформанс: о связях и границах»

The lecture took place on August 29, 2019. The course "Performance Theory and Practice" would be incomplete without a discussion of contemporary dance. Firstly, because the "performative turn" in contemporary art of the 2000s often brought dance into the museum space. Secondly, dance offers a unique perspective on pressing contemporary issues: labor and precarity, the "live" and technically mediated event, identity and sexuality. Thirdly, because the history and theory of dance are traditionally considered separately from the history and theory of (visual) art. The lecturers will attempt to establish the key milestones linking the history of dance and performance within the context of processes common to the history of contemporary art. They will also explore how and why contemporary dance has abandoned its specific medium and its attachment to the "grace," "freedom of movement," and "autonomy" that defined it in modernism. They will offer their understanding of the boundary between the processual art of dance and the art of performance as an object and share their thoughts on why questions of the medium may still be interesting today. The conversation between the critic and the curator will provide a broad framework for understanding dance. Anastasia Proshutinskaya is an independent curator and researcher of contemporary dance. From 2012 to 2018, she worked at the ZIL Cultural Center (Moscow), where she focused on educational projects in dance theory and international exchanges, residencies, and the publication of works by young dance artists. Since 2018, she has been participating in the Documentary Choreography laboratory with the support of the Sakharov Center. She received a master's degree in art history (Moscow State University) and performance studies (University of Illinois, USA). Anna Kozonina is a dance critic, editor, and researcher of contemporary dance. She publishes critical articles on Colta.ru, Aroundart.org, Roomfor.ru, the Art Magazine, and the European Springback Magazine. In 2018, she received a grant from the Garage Museum to create a book about contemporary Russian dance performance. She runs the Telegram channel "Strange Dances."
