Today on our 2005 Chevy Colorado, we'll be installing the Takonsha Primus IQ trailer brake controller, part number TK90160. With this brake controller, we will be using the universal 7-pin wiring kit, part number ETBC7. We'll start at the rear of the vehicle. On this particular vehicle, there was already a 4-way trailer connector installed. We will begin by finding a location to mount he 7-way and 4-way trailer connector. On this particular, we we're able to mount the bracket just under the bumper edge. To mount the 7- and 4-way trailer connector bracket to the bumper, we used 2 self-tapping screws. To make things easier, we will go ahead and make some of our wire connections on the table before we install the 7- and 4-way trailer connector up on the vehicle. This part of the ETBC7 kit, a long section of wire is included. This will need to be connected to the black and the blue wire coming out of the back of the 7- and 4-way trailer connector. The black connects to black, and on this particular instance, the white will connect to the blue. In this particular installation, we will not be using the purple wire. The wires will be connected using butt connectors and crimped. Now, we will go ahead and tape up the wire harness with some electrical tape leaving a small section of the 4-way pigtail hanging out so that we can connect it to the 4-way that is already installed on the vehicle. Now that all of our wire connections have been made, let's go ahead and slip the connector into the bracket that we mounted to the bumper brace. We will use 4 screws and nuts to connect the 4-way and 7-way connector to the bracket. Now, we're ready to connect the 4-way with the vehicle's 4-way. Here, you might want to add a little bit of dielectric grease, part number 11755. Once you have the 4-way pushed together, it's a good idea to go ahead and put a zip tie around them to help hold them in place as well as wrap them in electrical tape. Once you have the wires taped up, the kit comes with a protective wire loom that you'll want to slide over the wires and again, put some electrical tape around it to help hold it in place. This will give the wires a little extra protection when you feed them up under the trailer hitch in the bumper area. Once the connector is attached to the brace, now, we will need to go ahead and use another self-tapping screw and attach our ground wire. Now, we will go ahead and run our 2 wires in a protective casing, and we need to run that to the front of the vehicle. You need to make sure that as you're routing this wire that you keep it away from any sharp edges or hot areas such as a muffler, exhaust, or any areas where it become pinched. To secure the wires, we use zip ties. Once you've run the wire to the front of the vehicle, go ahead and zip tie the extra wiring to the 4-way as well as where the plug is. To help clean up the installation, it's good to use a pair of side cutters to snip off the excess of the zip tie once you've snugged them firmly. Now that the wire has been pulled up into the engine compartment, you want to look for where the wire harness goes through into the cab of the vehicle. At this point, we will need to make a small slit into the big rubber grommet. Before you cut any of the length of this wire, you'll want to pre-measure about how much wire you're going to need to make it over to your brake controller as well as the battery connection. Now, we'll go ahead and mount the circuit breaker. In this case, we're going to mount one on either side of where the battery is located on this vehicle on the inside fender area. Again, we will use self-tapping screws to attach both of them. The 12-volt hot lead coming from the rear plug will go through the 40-amp circuit breaker and directly to the positive side of the battery. We will use a 20-amp circuit breaker to connect from the vehicle's positive side to the 12-volt hot lead of the brake control. Now, we will use the extra wire that
