Mary Magdalene: 18th-century Spanish image. Veronica: 18th-century Spanish image. The Lord of the Garden: 20th-century image (work of José Ascensio Lamiel). The Arrest: The Lord is an 18th-century image from Quito; the centurion and the Jews are carvings from the same school. The Denial: The Lord is of Spanish origin, while Saint Peter is a carving from Quito (both from the 18th century). The Flagellation: The Lord and the Jews are carvings from Quito from the 18th century. The Fallen Lord: 18th-century carving from Popayán accompanied by an angel from the Quito school. The Ecce Homo: A 17th-century image, one of the most beloved devotions in the city. The Lord Jesus: An 18th-century image. The Lord of Forgiveness: An image of Spanish origin (attributed to the school of Gregorio Fernández). Calvary: A sculptural group representing the crucifixion. The Crucifix: An image of the crucified Christ. Our Lady of Sorrows: An 18th-century Spanish image that closes the procession as the central figure of the evening. HOLY WEEK POPAYÁN 2026: HOLY TUESDAY PROCESSION IN THE RAIN - DEPARTURE FROM SAN AGUSTÍN RAIN, FALLS, AND DEVOTION: THIS IS HOW THE PROCESSION OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS UNDER THE RAIN IN POPAYÁN WAS The Holy Tuesday Procession of Our Lady of Sorrows is emblematic for the elegance of the San Agustín Church. Although witnessing the "falls" or the hasty retreat due to the rain can be distressing for the bearers and the faithful, it also demonstrates the most human and resilient side of Holy Week in Popayán. What makes this procession unique: The Departure from San Agustín: The architectural setting of this parish lends a special mystique to the start of the procession. Devotion to the Virgin: Beyond the "Seven Sorrows," she is the symbol of the mother who accompanies; that is why people remain in the rain until the very last moment. The Sacrifice: Watching the bearers maneuver the floats (which can weigh hundreds of kilos) on the wet pavement is a testament to faith and impressive physical strength. It is a shame that the rain interrupted the procession, but as they say there: "No one can stop the procession, only the sky."
