On May 1st, Essen saw a massive demonstration. The event was prompted, in part, by a rally held by the far-right party "Die Heimat" (The Homeland), which was met with strong counter-protests. Thousands of people took to the streets in the city center and the Rüttenscheid district. While the turnout for the right-wing demonstration fell significantly short of expectations, left-wing alliances, unions, and civil society groups mobilized even larger numbers of people. This led to hours of blockades, a large police presence, and tense situations – nevertheless, according to the police, the situation remained largely peaceful. Officers prevented a direct clash between the two groups. Several criminal charges were filed, dispersal orders were issued, and one person was taken into custody.
