Hamilton's Military Reissue Is the Best Field Watch Under $1,000

Hamilton just released what might be the best field watch under $1,000 and it has the military history to back it up. Based on the FAPD 5101, a military-issue watch built for U.S. Air Force navigators during the Vietnam War, the new Hamilton 36mm Khaki Field Mechanical is a genuine reissue, not just a tribute. Produced exclusively in 2026 to celebrate 250 years of America and limited to 1,776 numbered pieces, it's already being nicknamed the Hamilton 250. On paper, it slots right into the existing Khaki Field Mechanical lineup alongside the 38mm and 42mm but it brings some meaningful upgrades. Most notably, 100 meters of water resistance compared to 50 meters on its siblings, and a size and aesthetic that's far more faithful to the original military source material. The field watch space is crowded with legends like the IWC Mark Series and Rolex Explorer at the high end, and even if we just look at watches under $1,000, we see legends like the Seiko Alpinist and Hamilton Khaki Automatic, amongst others. Despite this populated space, I believe this NEW 36mm version of the Khaki Field Mechanical truly has the perfect blend of specs, military history, and perfect sizing. Coming in at $725, this is truly a value packed watch. Let me know in the comments what you think of the Hamilton 250 Anniversary Edition. Are you buying it? Is it the best field watch under $1K?
