Why Did Heaven Become the Villain? (South Park to Hazbin Hotel)

When did Heaven become the ultimate villain, and why is Hollywood so obsessed with making angels the bad guys? In this video essay, we break down a storytelling trope I call "Christian Subversion." We trace the timeline of animation history, starting from the wholesome reverence of VeggieTales and A Charlie Brown Christmas, to the mundane mockery of Family Guy and South Park. We explore how shows like Castlevania and Attack on Titan weaponized the "Corrupt Priest" trope, before looking at the final boss of modern subversion: Hazbin Hotel. How did we get to a point where Lucifer is the misunderstood hero, Adam is a tyrannical frat-bro, and defeating Heaven is the ultimate victory?
