And it was through their story that, on May 31, 2014, in Wisconsin, Slenderman suddenly became real and sadly tragic. Their obsession and fear for Slenderman grew exponentially, until the two decided to become Proxies, or followers of Slenderman. He welcomed them into his palace, which they claim is located in a forest in Nicolet National Park, a five-hour drive from their home, finally sparing them from torment and relieving them of their fears. To obtain Proxi status, the process is simple: they must prove their loyalty... and kill their friend Payton. To sacrifice her. The opportunity apparently presented itself on May 30, 2014, Morgan's birthday, when a small sleepover was organized between the three friends. The story of the attack sparked an international outcry; many were shocked that two young girls had committed such a violent act. Authorities opened an investigation to understand how and why the two girls had decided to attack Payton. In the media world, this case prompted a profound reflection on the real risks of internet culture and social media in general. Morgan and Anissa were both minors at the time of the attack and attempted to argue that they had been influenced by the media and social media. However, the court refused to consider this argument and ruled that the two girls should be tried as adults and received harsh sentences. Morgan was sentenced to 40 years in prison, while Anissa was sentenced to 25 years. Both expressed regret for what they did and apologized to Payton and his family.
