Why Cathay Pacific Refused to Fly Small Planes for 40 Years

If you look at the fleet of almost any major global airline—Delta, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines—you will find a mix of massive long-haul planes (widebodies) and smaller, single-aisle planes (narrowbodies) like the Boeing 737 or Airbus A320. But Cathay Pacific did something completely bizarre. From 1983 (when they retired their last Boeing 707) all the way to 2021, Cathay Pacific mainline operated zero narrowbody aircraft. Even for a 90-minute hop from Hong Kong to Taipei or Manila, they used massive, twin-aisle Boeing 777s and Airbus A330s.
