The Bushmaster is an Australian-built Protected Mobility Vehicle that Ukrainian troops now call the safest place on the front line. This British War Machine documentary examines how a slow, right-hand-drive "battlefield taxi," once dismissed as an armoured Winnebago, became one of the most survivable armoured vehicles of the war in Ukraine. Designed in the 1990s at Bendigo, Victoria, and built by Thales, the Bushmaster was the first armoured vehicle designed from the ground up in Australia since the Second World War. It was never meant to be a weapon. It was built to carry a section of infantry across vast distances and deliver them ready to fight. Its deep V-shaped hull, the same principle used by MRAP mine-protected vehicles, was shaped to split the force of a mine or IED away from the crew rather than drive it up into the compartment. That single design choice would go on to save lives in Iraq, Afghanistan, and now Ukraine.
