CAROL BURNETT Mattress '59 "Shy"
Carol Burnett repeated her 1959 Broadway role of Princess Winnifred in "Once Upon a Mattress" for two CBS TV specials, in 1964 and 1972. But one may get a better idea of why she was such an instant hit in "Mattress" from this 1959 TV appearance, in which she and the original cast perform her big entrance number "Shy" exactly as they were performing it every night at the Phoenix Theatre, where the new musical had recently opened. The Burnett seen here is not yet the TV superstar she was becoming by the time she taped the first TV "Mattress" five years later.
