Dutch Cresteds, the black variety with a white crest, are arguably among the most striking representatives of the large group of crested chickens. Their history stretches back a long way; black chickens with white crests can be seen in paintings dating back to the 17th century. The modern type of the breed, however, emerged in the 19th century. Roosters can be easily distinguished from hens by their crests, as theirs are significantly looser and more expansive, while the hens' appear more ball-shaped and closed. Dutch Cresteds are considered a particularly peaceful and people-oriented breed of chicken, which can also bring a lot of joy to children.
