Operation Typhoon, the attempt to conquer Moscow, was the culmination of Operation Barbarossa and a turning point. But it was launched too late and faced a host of problems: unbearable cold, snow, logistical failures, and so on. The Russians put up a stalwart resistance, and Moscow was never conquered. For Germany, it was a very serious strategic disaster, because the Führer's imperative in launching his attack against the Soviet Union was to win in a single campaign. Hitler and Stalin, each in their own way, made strategic mistakes. But it took the Russians three long and bloody years to get their revenge.
