The Peasant Marey
A man is in jail. His name is not told, but he is the one telling the story. He is thinking about his past life. He is sitting with some other prisoners. One man tells a story about how he killed a man with an axe. Everyone laughs. But the man telling the story — the main character — does not laugh. He feels sad. He remembers something from when he was a little boy. He remembers a kind peasant. The peasant’s name was Marey. This memory comes into his mind like a light. It makes him feel warm inside. It helps him forget the sad and hard life in jail for some time. When he was nine years old, he lived on a big farm in the countryside. His father was a landowner. Many peasants (poor workers) worked on their land. The little boy did not play much with other kids. He was quiet and had a big imagination. One day, it was Easter time. The boy was walking alone on a path near the forest. Suddenly, he heard someone say that a wolf had been seen nearby. The boy got very scared. He thought the wolf would come out of the trees and bite him. He could feel his heart beating fast. He ran. He ran as fast as he could. He saw a man working near the road. It was Marey, a peasant who worked on their land. Marey was fixing something in the field. The boy ran to Marey and hugged him tightly. He was crying and shaking. Marey looked at the boy with love and care. He gently asked him, “What’s wrong, my dear little master?” The boy told him about the wolf. Marey did not laugh at him. He didn’t tell him to stop being silly. Instead, he looked around and said kindly, “There’s no wolf here. Don’t be afraid, my dear. I’ll protect you. Let’s pray to God, and everything will be alright.” Marey took off his hat and made the sign of the cross. He told the boy to do the same. Then he said a short prayer. His voice was soft. His hands were rough from work, but gentle. He held the boy close. He calmed him down. The boy stopped shaking. Marey then said, “Don’t be afraid. I’ll walk with you.” He walked with the boy back to the road. He kept talking to him nicely. The boy started to feel safe again. He even smiled. After a while, Marey waved goodbye. The boy went home. Now, many years later, sitting in jail, the man remembers this moment. It makes him feel good. He remembers Marey’s face. It was an old, poor face, but it was full of kindness. Marey was not rich or smart, but he had a big heart. He was a simple man, but he had true love in him. The man in jail thinks: Maybe Marey didn’t even remember this moment. Maybe it was just one small thing for him. But for the boy, it was a big moment. It stayed in his heart forever. It taught him about love, care, and safety. It was a moment of light in his dark life. He also feels sorry. He wonders if he ever thanked Marey. He wishes he could go back and say thank you. But Marey is probably long gone now. Still, this memory gives the man hope. Even in jail, with bad people and sad days, he holds on to this moment. The story shows that even a small act of kindness can stay in someone’s heart forever. Marey’s care helped the boy feel safe. It was just a simple hug and kind words, but it meant so much. It helped the boy grow into someone who could still remember love, even in hard times. In the end, the man smiles to himself. The other prisoners are still talking loudly, laughing, and cursing. But he is quiet. In his heart, he is with Marey again, walking on that path, feeling safe in his arms. -------- 🙏 Support the Channel: 🔸 Support via UPI: syllabuswithrohit@upi 🔸 Buy Me A Coffee: buymeacoffee.com/SyllabuswithRohit
