I want to show you my actual thought process as I build these paintings, and at the end I talk about why layers are one of the most important things you can understand as an abstract painter. Layers give a painting its sense of history. They create depth, complexity, and tension — and they keep the eye discovering something new every time it looks. Without them, a painting can feel flat.
