Juliane Rebentisch: Ausstellungen des Politischen in der Kunst (Mosse Lecture vom 13.06.2019)
Juliane Rebentisch: “Exhibitions of the Political in Art” Introduction and discussion with Ethel Matala de Mazza In current debates about the relationship between art and politics, false dichotomies are all too common: While one side argues that art can only be considered legitimate if it presents itself as a medium of the political, the other side defends the freedom of art as its only truly political dimension. Using a series of exemplary debates, this lecture will present the problems faced by both sides, focusing in particular on the role of curators in the context of the current relationship between art and politics. Juliane Rebentisch is Professor of Philosophy and Aesthetics at the Offenbach University of Art and Design, where she has also served as Vice President since 2014. From 2015 to 2018, she was President of the German Society for Aesthetics. She is a member of the faculty at the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research. Her research focuses on aesthetics, ethics, and political philosophy. Books include: "Aesthetics of Installation" (Suhrkamp 2003); "Creation and Depression: Freedom in Contemporary Capitalism" (ed. with Ch. Menke, Kadmos 2010); "The Art of Freedom: On the Dialectic of Democratic Existence" (Suhrkamp 2012); "Theories of Contemporary Art: An Introduction" (Junius 2013); "Negativity: Art, Law, Politics" (ed. with Thomas Khurana et al., Suhrkamp 2018).
