Shadow and Light- Wednesday, Week 34: Luistina (09/09/2020)

Future niece. With this completely unintentional, forward-looking depiction of my niece Cristina (which ends up being an amalgamation of her and my sister Luisa, her mom) we continue our week of Shadow and Light, with the edgy, sharp shadows created by artificial light. Deep eye sockets, the under-plane of the nose blending with a long cast shadow that trickles down past the upper lip, gently mountains over the lower lip to finally disappear and rest along the shadow mass that the envelops the chin and connects it to the neck. A wonderful structure-driven trajectory. It makes us reflect upon how important it is to always, always respect the underlying structure of form. We don't necessarily have to know the exact names of bones and muscles when, for example, depicting the human body, but we have to compensate our lack of knowledge with acute observation.
