How to win a trade war: Book launch event with Soumaya Keynes, Chad Bown and Swati Dhingra

Trade wars are becoming a feature of the modern global economy and are being tied to actual wars too. Britain has played its part by voting to leave the EU, while President Trump has taken trade disruption to a new level. While it can be hard to identify ‘winners’ from trade wars, it’s easy to identify losses – so having the right strategy is crucial, especially for a mid-sized, open economy like the UK. In a depressingly timely but accessible new book How to Win a Trade War, leading trade experts Soumaya Keynes and Chad Bown explore the history, players, and rules of trade, and ask how we prepare for what the future might hold. They explain how trade wars can lead to hot wars, and what the West can learn from China. As post-Brexit Britain continues to search for its place in the world, and the world waits for President Trump’s next trade foray, following hot on the heels of the ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs that were overturned by the Supreme Court, the book is an essential guide for policy makers and economists in how to navigate the choppy waters of global trade. The Resolution Foundation is hosting an event to mark the launch of Soumaya and Chad’s new book. Soumaya will be joined by one of the UK’s leading trade experts Professor Swati Dhingra to discuss how mid-21st century trade wars might evolve, and what this might mean for the UK’s trade strategy. The event will be open for people to physically attend, alongside being broadcast via YouTube and the Resolution Foundation website. Viewers will be able to submit questions to the panel before and during the event via Slido. Speakers: Soumaya Keynes, columnist at the Financial Times and host of The Economics Show podcast Swati Dhingra, Associate Professor of Economics at the LSE and External Member of the MPC Ruth Curtice, Chief Executive of the Resolution Foundation (Chair)
