Tune Up Your Small Block Chevy - Part 1
In part 1 we will cover the compression test and removing and installing spark plugs and spark plug wires on the 283 CID small block. Step 1 - Use compressed air to blow any dirt from around the spark plugs. Step 2 - Loosen the plugs one full turn and start the engine to blow out any carbon chips from the cylinder. Step 3 - Remove all plugs and check compression. 150 PSI minimum and no difference of more than 15 psi between the highest and lowest reading. Check your service manual for the proper compression on your engine. Step 4 - Gap (.035) and install all spark plugs. Torque to 25 ft.-lbs. Step 5 - Route new plug wires and install on distributor cap.
