For those that don't know, Los Angeles' very own KDAY 1580 AM was the VERY FIRST 24 hour hip hop radio station broadcast IN THE WORLD. Back in the early 80's hip hop was not yet a dominant force on the airwaves, and was only featured as weekly specialty segments on stations with other programming throughout the week, typically airing late night and on the weekends. 1580 KDAY AM changed all of that, blazing a trail that is felt to this day, and its significance can't be understated. The KDAY Mixmasters were the station's legendary stable of on air DJs, and as tastemakers and technicians, they introduced clasic music to listeners with flawlessly executed DJ sets. Many went on to further fame and notoriety post KDAY as DJs, producers, and musical artists. Notable names such as Tony G, Battlecat, Aladdin, Joe Cooley, Julio G, Hen-Gee, Ralph M, Jammin James Carter, even a young Dr. Dre (!); alongside the legendary program director/radio personality Greg Mack, paved the way for LA Radio and Hip Hop for decades to follow, and influenced an entire of generation of DJs, including the members of one of the most iconic DJ crews of all time, the Beat Junkies. When you see the look of respect and adoration in the faces of the members of the Beat Junkies, legends themselves, that should tell you something about the impact the KDAY Mixmasters made. History was made during the NAMM 2023 Show at the JetPack Bags/Beat Junkies Booth. The Beat Junkies as hosts were able to coordinate this historic reunion, as this was the first time most of the KDAY Mixmasters had been together in many years. In addition to a set of showcases that exemplified the classic "west coast" style of DJing, those in attendance were treated to a history lesson in DJ history, as many members took some time on the mic to talk about the KDAY's rich history and legacy.
