A film about the old part of Kamyshin, where its historical character has been most fully preserved. Kamyshin is a city of regional significance with a population of approximately 110,000 people, located on the right bank of the Volga River in the Volgograd Region. Founded in 1668, Kamyshin developed over many centuries as a provincial merchant center of the Lower Volga region, with its own distinct architecture and cultural and national customs. It was home to townspeople, peasants, soldiers, colonists, and Cossacks, but the majority of the population were merchants. Kamyshin has a rich history. From here, Ataman Yermak Timofeevich, having portaged from the Ilovlya River to Kamyshinka, set out to conquer Siberia. Stepan Razin also reached the Volga by this route. In the summer of 1695, during his campaign against the Turks, Peter the Great visited Kamyshin. The Tsar noticed the narrow isthmus between Kamyshinka and Ilovlya and decided to dig a canal there, which would connect the Volga and Don rivers. In 1697, the Dmitrievsky Streltsy Regiment was transferred to Kamyshin, and the town was renamed Dmitrievsk. It remained under this name until 1780, when Catherine II ordered Dmitrievsk to return to its former name, Kamyshin.
