Why Nobody Wants to Visit Atlantic City Anymore

Why Nobody Wants to Visit Atlantic City Anymore Subscribe to the channel: @MonumentalTowers On April 27, 1972, a thousand people stood on the Atlantic City Boardwalk and watched the Traymore Hotel die. Six and a half million cubic feet of poured concrete. Twin golden domes visible a mile out at sea. By 2014, four of the city's twelve casinos closed inside nine months, taking 8,000 jobs with them. By 2020, the population had fallen to 38,497, less than half of its wartime peak. Most people think the casinos killed Atlantic City. The truth is older, stranger, and far more troubling. In this video, we talk about the rise and fall of America's playground including the railway gamble of 1854, the boardwalk's invention in 1870, William Lightfoot Price's reinforced concrete masterpieces, the demolished Traymore and Marlborough-Blenheim, Nucky Johnson's 28-year reign from the ninth floor of the Ritz-Carlton, the 1929 Atlantic City Conference of organized crime bosses, the postwar collapse caused by home air conditioning and cheap flights to Florida, the 1976 casino referendum, the demolition decade, the 2014 casino closures, and what still stands on the Boardwalk today. Subscribe so the buildings that built America never get forgotten a second time. Comment where you're watching from and what you make of Atlantic City's slow collapse from World's Playground to ghost town. Share this on Facebook, Reddit or with anyone who's ever walked that boardwalk, because viewers like you are why this channel keeps the stories alive. Note: We Use Public Domain Photos.
