Six and a half million cubic feet of poured concrete. Twin golden domes visible a mile out at sea. By 2014, four of the city's twelve casinos closed inside nine months, taking 8,000 jobs with them. By 2020, the population had fallen to 38,497, less than half of its wartime peak. Most people think the casinos killed Atlantic City. The truth is older, stranger, and far more troubling.
