FOOL'S GOLD: 4 Days of Winter Bikepacking the Gold Rush Snowmobile Trail

Deep in the foothills of the Cariboo Mountains lays a legendary strip of trail. As the longest off-road trail in BC, The Gold Rush Snowmobile Trail stretches 463km through BC’s Cariboo, tracing the same route that once carried fortune-seekers north more than a century ago. In the middle of particularly dry, mild February, three of us set off to ride a 285km section of the GRST, from Horsefly to Clinton. With very little information to go on, we were incredibly fortunate to be connected with Trail Boss Wayne, a local from Horsefly and a wealth of knowledge for the area and trail systems. He gave us tip, weather updates and an wonderfully warm greeting when we arrived at the trailhead. Each stretch of trail tells its own story. We encountered challenging snow conditions, chaotic ice and mechanical breakdowns. We travelled through the quiet of snow-covered valleys, past the echoes of mining history, and into communities that still carry the independent spirit of the frontier. This is an account of our own adventure on the route. The Gold Rush Snowmobile Trail is more than a line on the map—it’s a living journey through BC’s history, shaped by those who came before and those who continue to explore it today.
