99% of People Who've Seen Big Boy Have No Idea What Happens Inside the Cab
Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 is the world's largest operating steam locomotive. It weighs 1,208,750 pounds, stretches 132 feet, and produces 7,000 horsepower. Millions of people have watched it pass from trackside. Almost none of them know what happens inside the cab while they stand there watching. This video takes you inside the cab of Big Boy 4014 during its 2026 coast-to-coast America 250 tour. Lead engineer Ed Dickens and fireman Austin Barker operate a machine that runs on 1940s technology, burns atomized fuel oil in a 150-square-foot firebox, and demands skills that no school, simulator, or manual can teach. The cab temperature reaches 150 degrees Fahrenheit in summer. The boiler holds 10,500 gallons of water under 300 PSI of pressure. Every control except the PTC monitor and radio is original 1941 equipment. The video covers the 2016-2019 restoration led by Dickens, including the coal-to-oil conversion that succeeded where Union Pacific's 1946 attempt on Big Boy 4005 had failed. It also covers the 2024 installation of Positive Train Control directly into the tender, making 4014 the first steam locomotive to operate on the mainline without a diesel helper. The Hidden Economic Genius of Big Boy 4014 is that a third steam-powered dynamo generates the electricity to run a 21st-century GPS safety system from 19th-century thermodynamics.
