EARLY MAY HERPING! 🐍 Amazing Garter Snake Find! (Thamnophis sirtalis)

It is finally May, and that means one thing: the snakes are out! 🌞 I went out to my local hotspot today, and I was lucky enough to find this absolutely stunning Common Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis). Finding them early in the season, right after they emerge from their winter dens (or "hibernacula"), is always a highlight of the year. The excitement of spotting that first slither in the grass is unmatched. This beautiful, shy reptile was basking in the early spring sun to get its energy up.About this Incredible Animal:Garter snakes are one of the most recognizable and widespread snakes in North America, found from southern Canada down to Florida and Texas. They are known for their distinct striped patterns—often yellow, blue, or white stripes running down a black, brown, or olive-green body.Habitat & Behavior:These snakes are highly adaptable, living in fields, forests, wetlands, and even our own backyards, but they strongly prefer being near water sources like ponds, streams, and marshes. They are expert swimmers and, as you can see in this video, excellent at navigating through dense spring vegetation! Why They Matter (Ecological Importance):Garter snakes are a gardener's best friend and crucial to a healthy ecosystem! They act as natural pest control, feeding on slugs, snails, insects, and small rodents. Because they are semi-aquatic, they play a key role in transferring nutrients between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Thanks for watching!
