If you have a particularly fluffy or double coated dog like Mochi here, matting is a super common issue and even though daily or regular brushing can prevent it in the first place, sometimes matting can happen to the best of us! Luckily, most times we can remove the matting right at home with the right techniques and tools! — So first off, you’re going to need a brush or two. My favorite for the body fur is this one, the deshedding brush, and then for the tail and under the tail where it’s more sensitive and also is the most prone for matting in Mochi, I love this gentle slicker brush. I made sure to get one with plastic heads on the bristles because I used to have a slicker brush with wire bristles but it was too rough for Mochi so I got this one to help with already matted fur as well as regular maintenance. Some people also use specific detangler brushes. Keep in mind that depending on the breed, different brushes might work better. I’m not an expert on what each breed needs in terms of tools, so just look on Google for breed specific questions. The next thing you need to remove matting is a detangler / conditioner grooming spray. There’s no one brand that I think is amazing or perfect, just find one that says its for detangling, doesn’t contain anything toxic, and has lots of good reviews. Lastly, you need to have scissors. I use these curved scissors made specifically for dogs because this prevents the scissors accidentally pricking or stabbing Mochi. Ok so to first get started on removing the matting from your dog’s fur, make sure you have your dog in a position where he can’t move too much or run away because you need them still. Once they’re still, see if you can gently massage or pull the matting apart or at least looser. Sometimes, if the mats are new, you can demat them with your fingers. If you can’t, which you most often can’t, just still loosen it gently with your hands, then isolate the matting so that you are only dealing with the matted part, and see if you can gently brush it. Again, if it’s not that bad, you might be able to solve it here. Then, spray the matted parts with your detangler spray, and massage that into the mats while again trying to pull it apart, and try brushing again. This might take a while so be patient, and make sure you don’t pull their fur because its not comfortable for your dog at all. By the way, some people swear by using cornstarch to fix the matting — I’ve never tried this, bu definitely look into that. If none of this works, we use our scissors to basically cut the matting out of our dog’s fur. To do this, just isolate each clump away from the non-matted fur, and cut it out gently and slowly clump by clump. Once you’ve done that, brush the entire area and pay special attention to that area, especially as it grow out, to make sure it doesn’t get matted away. Depending on the breed of dog and their fur, you can often just shave these matted areas away too. However, if you have a double coated dog like Mochi here, you can never shave them because it would ruin their fur forever.
