Çanakkale Çan District Tour: Places to Visit Çan district is located 70 km from the center of Çanakkale. It has a population of around 50,000. The district is situated on the old Çanakkale-Balıkesir road. The name of Çan district comes from the tradition of producing and selling animal bells in the markets established in the region during the Ottoman period. The area, which was a stopping point for caravans and known as "Çan Pazarı" (Bell Market), eventually took the name "Çan" (bell). It is known that the name comes from the bells hung around the necks of animals. Until 1950, Çan relied entirely on agriculture and animal husbandry. In addition, there are two thermal power plants in the district. The presence of large industrial establishments has contributed to the district's development. Another important landmark of the district is its thermal springs. In 2012, Çan Municipality opened a large thermal spa facility in the town center, which was later privatized. Next to the hotel is Çan Thermal Park, the largest playground in Çanakkale. The Çan town center is divided in two by the Kocbaş Stream. The "Atav Bridge," used by Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on his two visits to Çan on May 15 and June 24, 1934, is one of the first bridges of the Republic of Turkey. Located in the Cumhuriyet neighborhood, known locally as Çayırlar, at the entrance to the Çan Lignite Enterprises, the Atav Suspension Bridge is the first reinforced concrete bridge of the Republic of Turkey.
