Shishijima, located off the coast of Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture, was once known as the "Flower Island," with flower fields spreading across the entire island. The island is famous for its floriculture, which cultivates small chrysanthemums, daisies, marigolds, and other flowers, and it is said to have had a population of around 1,000 people during the Meiji and Taisho periods. Since the period of high economic growth after the war, the island has become increasingly depopulated due to changes in its industrial structure, and now the population is just 20. The islanders are working to restore the island to its former glory. From spring to summer, the island is decorated with a variety of flowers, including nemophila and daisies, and so many tourists visit the island to catch a glimpse of these flower fields in the sky that the regular ferries cannot fit on board.
