Make Your Own Chai Tea Concentrate: Noreen's Kitchen
Greetings! I love Chai tea! My favorite is a Vanilla Iced Chai tea on a hot day. If you are not familiar with Chai tea, it is a wonderful sweet creamy drink that is full of lots of spices. Cinnamon, clove, allspice, black pepper, star anise and cardamom are what you will find in most versions. Chai varies by the region in which it is prepared. For instance the version we are making is more likely to be found in India, however if you travel further east you may find that they will add fresh ginger, lemon grass or citrus to this mix. It just depends. Chai is as individual as the masters that blend it. I said I love Chai tea, but I do not like the price of a tall icy beverage at the coffee house or juice bar! I also don't like the price of the Chai tea concentrate that can be purchased at the health food store or organic food market. You get a 1 quart box of concentrate and the price can vary depending on where you buy it from 6 to 8 dollars a pop! I always look at the things that I like and wonder how I can make them at home. I wasn't certain that I could make a comparable substitute, but I have succeeded and I am so happy and so is my daughter Micah! This is nothing more than a spiced simple syrup that starts with strongly brewed tea instead of just water. This is very easy and it does require some spices. I happened to have all of these on hand because I buy my spices online and other local outlets in bulk. This keeps the overall cost down for me. If you are a spice collector like me, you will have no problem throwing this concentrate together to enjoy for a long time. If you have to invest in the spices, do not despair! The initial investment of the spices will be on the high side, however those spices will last a while and you will be able to use them in other things. Look in the Latin foods section of your grocery store or seek out ethnic markets to get even better prices on spices if you don't want to purchase in bulk. When you want to make a Chai tea either hot or iced, simply mix 1/2 cup of concentrate with at least 1 cup of cold or hot milk. I love to add a splash of vanilla syrup to the mix to make a vanilla chai latte! I hope you try this and I hope you love it! Happy Eating!
