Falguni Nayar on Nykaa and Authenticity

India's most successful female entrepreneur, Falguni Nayar, talks about creating Nykaa, one of the first unicorn IPOs, and her journey. Quitting a cushy banking job and hustling a start up from a small gala wasn't easy. Sacrifices as a mother, mental health ups and downs and creating a massive platform for beauty were all part of her life as an entrepreneur when she started Nykaa at almost 50. She says she wont be happy till women are in equal numbers to men as entrepreneurs and that Nykka is a message to women to break barriers and think that the sky is the limit. She's launched her own private labels, created a voice for domestic and international beauty products in India and has a hugely successful partnership with Katrina Kaif for KaybyKatrina. She says the average spend on beauty has gone up in India but is still way behind the West and even markets like Vietnam. Her daughter was a co-founder and they have spent the last few years learning from each other. Simple at heart, Falguni says money is secondary and she's always enjoyed the process more. Competition is creeping up and she addresses it frankly and talks about the massive distribution of Nykaa being an advantage with a plan to amp up physical stores and Nykaa fashion. A natural leader and a baniya at heart, she talks about her upbringing being progressive and education being a big influence. Banking was also an influence with investors lining up, including stalwarts like Harsh Mariwala. She names Uday Kotak and Deepak Parekh also as influences and talks about lessons she learnt on being prudent and profitable. A lover of spreadsheets and gardens, Falguni is nowhere near slowing down.
