In 1764, a terrible terror fell upon the French province of Gévaudan. Over the next three years, an unknown creature attacked women and children 240 times, killing a total of 112 people. It brutally mutilated human bodies and scattered the remains throughout the surrounding forests and fields. Even the intervention of the King of France himself, who sent his finest hunters to Gévaudan, proved fruitless. Historians still debate who or what this bloodthirsty creature was. Was it a massive wolf, or perhaps a monster summoned to life that escaped its creator's control? The beast's identity proved to be the greatest mystery of 18th-century Europe.
