If you’ve listened to me bore on for long enough, you’ll know that AP are the masters of the ceramic game. The finishing is sublime, the weight is feather light, and the combination of ceramics with the angular Royal Oak case has always been a match made in heaven, whether thats been black, white or electric blue. Funny story though, electric blue, although searingly popular on release and to this day was NOT the shade that Bennahmias wanted. He wanted Bleu Nuit Nuage 50 which loosely translates to Blue Night Cloud aka midnight blue, a tone made famous by the venerable Royal Oak Jumbo dials. Why would the CEO of AP not be able to commission what he wanted when he wanted it? Because until now, ceramic being a nightmare mistress and a half to master, it had been quite literally impossible to make. Only now has the technology evolved to far enough for this particular colour to be possible, and stable. The Bleu Nuit models were released in a pair, the headliner being the Double Balance Wheel Openworked and this, a re-edition of the fairly iconic Royal Oak Offshore “Beast”, so I suppose this one is the Beast in Bleu Nuit Nuage which has a certain ring to it and is best said sober. The beast is my favourite of the pair for both its legibility and beefy proportions. Its beef is misleading though, as being ceramic, it’s a light-weight chunk of gorgeous. Its 42mm diameter and 15.3mm thick with 100 metres water resistance and a 70 hour power reserve thanks to calibre 4404 which is a flyback column wheel chronograph movement, and a very fine one at that which is visible through the titanium and sapphire case-back. The case and bracelet are as sharp and superbly finished as you would expect from AP with a gorgeous grained finish contrasting with polished ceramic highlights, effectively the offshore offers everything Royal Oak but scaled up for modern tastes - it looks and feels fantastically bomb-proof, and the colour is full on chefs kiss midnight blue which shifts between almost black to slightly softer almost dark denim tone depending on the light. It’s beautiful, and has jumped to the top of my list for coveted ceramics. The dial is a Mega Tapisserie in the matching bleu nuit tone with a scaled up grid pattern (hence the mega element) and it works exceptionally well with the 6,9,12 chronograph layout. I think that had the tapissery been any finer the dial would have risked looking busier than necessary. As it is, it's a perfect execution with easy to read info, and broad lumed hands and markers - clear, crisp, and right up my alley. In my opinion, this is the perfect Offshore. It mixes the retro fabulous stature and layout of the original Beast, with the absolute cutting edge of ceramic technology in a traditional AP colourway.
