Virology Lectures 2021 #18 - Transformation and Oncogenesis
About 20% of human cancers are associated with virus infections, but viruses do not directly cause cancer. Rather virus infection may make cells immortal, placing them on the road to cancer. In this lecture we review the discovery of RNA and DNA tumor viruses and how an understanding of how they transform cells led to an understanding of how cell growth is controlled. It all began with a chicken! I’m also a professor of virology at Columbia University in New York. I’ve been doing research on viruses since 1976, and teaching virology in classrooms and online since 1999. On this YouTube channel I share videos of my lectures, podcasts, and more. New videos are uploaded multiple days a week. I don’t monetize my videos because it’s disruptive to learning.
