It is a well-known and common bird in Brazil and highly prized by birders and breeders in many regions of the country. Something that sets it apart from other birds is its leaping sound when it sings. The song is simple and repetitive. The appearance of adult males can be black or brown. This is because the Tiziu changes from brown to black and from black to brown alternately, molting twice a year. One for mating, when it turns black with a metallic blue sheen, and another for resting, when it turns brown. "Bate estaca" is another name for this bird, also known as "papa-arroz" (rice-eater), "tiziu" (springer), "veludinho" (velvet), "serrador" (serra-serra), and "alfaiate" (tailor). Its scientific name is Volatinia Jacarina, which means: a small bird that flies up and down, referring to its jumps when singing. Its song is a sequence of "ti, ti, ti," ending with "Tiziu." The Tiziu's song is greenish-brown like an olive and has a striped-striped breast. Chicks of both sexes resemble females. The tiziu measures about 11 cm in length and has a small white spot on the underside of its wings. There are three subspecies of tiziu, but only Volatinia jacarina occurs in Brazil, and it is also present in Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, and Paraguay. These birds can be seen in groups in open areas, eating grass seeds. This can even occur in urban areas, where these birds can be seen among other birds such as collared tanagers and canaries. The tiziu is predominantly granivorous, meaning it feeds on grass seeds, such as Brachiaria, and small insects such as beetles, ants, termites, and spiders. In this case, it is possible to see this tiziu eating insects. In northeastern Brazil, the Grassquit can breed year-round. In other regions, they breed in spring and summer. Sexual maturity is reached at 12 months of age. Each pair incubates 2 to 4 clutches per season and can lay up to 3 eggs. However, the most common clutch is two chicks.
