Epic Pass Day: Crossing Sherpani Col & West Col (6200m)

Today we hiked from Sherpani Col High Camp (5,690 m) to Barnutse Base Camp (5,440 m) via Sherpani Col (6,190 m) and West Col (6,140 m). A massive day tackling the high passes. Starting at 4:30 AM, the team endures a freezing (-10°C) scramble up Sherpani Col (6200m) using fixed lines, followed by a grueling traverse across a crevassed plateau to West Col. A difficult 200m rappel down West Col in gale-force winds takes hours, arriving at camp after dark, utterly exhausted after 13 hours. 🔽 The Great Himalaya Trail Hi, I'm Dave Brophy. From April to September 2019 Mathi and I thru-hiked the Great Himalaya Trail across Nepal. The concept of the Great Himalaya Trail is to follow the highest elevation continuous hiking route across the Himalayas. The Nepal section stretches for 1,400 km from Kanchenjunga in the east to Humla in the west. It winds through the mountains with an average elevation of 3,750 m, and up to 6,200 m, with an average daily ascent of over 1,000 m. The route includes parts of the more commercialised treks, linking them together with sections that are so remote even the locals seldom hike there.
