Stonework and masonry deterioration factors and conservation methods

The factors of deterioration of stonework/masonry on historic buildings and the methodologies used for their conservation. A discussion about the deterioration factors that commonly occur with stonework and masonry within historic buildings such as water ingress, inappropriate repairs and sulphation. We will talk about why they occur to begin with and the importance of breathability and conserving with ‘like for like’ materials. We will go through ways to recognise and prevent decay as well as appropriate methods to clean, conserve and repair this when deterioration has already occurred.
