On June 24, 2026, two major earthquakes struck northern Venezuela just 38 seconds apart. The first reached a magnitude of 7.2 and was followed by an even larger event of magnitude 7.5. But an earthquake of this magnitude cannot be represented simply by a star indicating the epicenter. The rupture propagated for approximately 200 kilometers, starting from the area near San Felipe and advancing eastward towards Caracas. Data indicates that the process involved segments of the Boconó and San Sebastián faults, including an extensive portion near the Venezuelan coast. In this video, I explain how different techniques allowed us to reconstruct the fault's movement: population intensity reports, aftershock distribution, seismic wave backprojection, and satellite radar interferometry, known as InSAR. We also analyzed the difference between magnitude and intensity, the site effect in sedimentary basins, the directionality of the rupture, the possibility of two earthquakes forming a seismic doublet, and the reasons why Caracas received such intense pulses of ground movement. The integration of Seismology, Structural Geology, and Geodesy revealed a much more extensive and complex process than the isolated epicenter shown in the first maps.
