Somewhere between burned CDs, mix tapes, and late-night rock radio, there was a sound that gave broken kids a place to exist. Those songs became lifeboats for people deconstructing from religious indoctrination, surviving childhood trauma, and learning that healing wasn’t betrayal. They carried anger without shame and hope. They refused to pretend everything was okay. Today, many of us still search for bands that speak with that same raw honesty, refusing polished perfection in favor of scars left uncovered. We don’t miss the past because it was better—we miss the feeling of being understood, and we long to hear voices brave enough to say it again. These are the types of bands I discovered at a time in my own life where I was drowning and feeling so very alone. That sound these bands brought into the world, those lyrics, we could all hear on the radio showed us damaged kids we weren’t alone. The hurt and anger was universal.
