200. Kiln Opening | One More Refire, Mug Swap Mugs & Amethyst Tide

Kiln Opening 200 was meant to be a small Bella refire… but I needed mug swap gifts saved in time. After the glaze disasters in my last kiln opening, I rushed a new batch of Amethyst Tide mugs through a UK heatwave, refired pinholed pieces, tested Advancer cookies, opened Bella at cone 6, and hoped I would have something good enough to take to my pottery friends. This kiln opening follows on from my previous pottery disaster and rescue videos, where I had major glaze runs, pinholes, stuck pieces and gifts that needed saving. This time I’m opening my little Bella kiln after a hot cone 6 firing, checking witness cones, testing refires, and seeing whether my new Amethyst Tide glaze combination behaved on a set of rushed handmade mugs. In this video you’ll see: Amethyst Tide mugs for a pottery mug swap A second refire on pieces from the disaster kiln Pinholes fixed by reglazing and refiring Advancer cookies from KilnShelf UK My handmade kiln cookies versus Advancer cookies Speedball glaze tests from sample pots gifted by Lucy at West2Ceramics Spectrum Soft White on a two-part connecting platter Mayco Celadon Bloom with Mayco Olive Float on espresso cups A Skool pottery challenge piece using randomly selected glazes Cone 6 witness cones in Bella More lessons in glaze runs, refiring and pottery rescue The Amethyst Tide glaze combo is one I created through lots of testing, and it has quickly become one of my favourite regular combinations. I use Amaco Honey Flux as the base, then wavy bands of Amaco Smoky Merlot, Amaco Textured Turquoise and Amaco Chun Plum to create soft movement and flowing drips. I also share the results of our Skool pottery community challenge, where I was pushed completely outside my comfort zone and had to glaze an actual piece with randomly selected glazes from my shelf — Mayco Winter Wood, Mayco Birch and Mayco Jungle Gems Purple Rain. This was filmed before my pottery meet-up with Maxine from Colleypit Pottery, Sarah Hallam Ceramics, Suza from Handmade by Suza, and Ronda from Bynon Studios Art. We were meeting at Potclays and then heading to Middleport Pottery, where Sarah had a market, so I was trying to decide which mugs and rescued pieces to take with me. ADVANCER SHELVES / KILNSHELF UK DISCOUNT The Advancer cookies shown in this video were kindly gifted to me by KilnShelf UK. I already use Advancer shelves in my larger kiln, but these small cookies were incredibly useful in Bella for catching glaze runs and making the cleanup much easier. If you’re in the UK and you’re interested in trying Advancer shelves or cookies, KilnShelf have a UK depot and you can order through: https://kilnshelf.uk You can use my discount code for 10% off: FARFOREST For viewers in the USA, KilnShelf have also kindly agreed to honour the FARFOREST discount code.
