Lane Position — Where to Ride, What to Own and What It Tells Every Driver Around You

Your lane position tells every driver around you where you are going before you've moved, and most riders were never taught this. This video covers the positioning system used in professional riding programmes worldwide: where to ride, what space to own, and how to use your position to become predictable, visible and in control. This is Part 1 of the Road Craft Series... videos covering the essential real-world traffic skills every rider needs. 🏍️ WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: ✓ Why "stay left" is dangerous advice — and what to do instead ✓ The motor vehicle mindset — you own the lane, not the edge ✓ Speed differential — why riding too slowly is as dangerous as riding too fast ✓ The three lane positions — left third, centre, right third — and when to use each ✓ The right tyre track — your default urban position and why it works ✓ Blocking position — how to occupy space so you cannot be ignored ✓ The 360-degree space cushion — front, rear, left, and right simultaneously ✓ The 2-second following distance rule — why distance is irrelevant and time isn't ✓ Lane position without markings — Bang Kachao rural roads and blind corners ✓ Blocking position under real traffic pressure — Bangkok streets 🔬 WHY THIS MATTERS: Every technique in this video is drawn from internationally recognised riding programmes: MSF (USA), MASTER (UK), and HART (Australia). The research is consistent: where you position yourself in the lane is one of the most controllable risk factors a rider has. The UK Transport Research Laboratory confirms that motorcyclists positioned at the lane edge face significantly higher collision risk than those riding centre or right of centre. The Hurt Report, the most comprehensive motorcycle crash study ever conducted, identified rider conspicuity as a factor in the overwhelming majority of multi-vehicle crashes. Position is how you control whether you are seen. ⏱️ VIDEO CHAPTERS: 00:00 — The dangerous instinct every beginner has 01:26 — You own the lane — motor vehicle, not bicycle 05:54 — Why the left edge gets riders hurt 09:30 — Ferry crossing to Bang Kachao 10:20 — The three positions and when to use each 13:42 — Blocking position and the 360-degree space cushion 17:00 — Bang Kachao — lane position without markings 17:44 — Demonstration in a Rural Area 23:42 — Ferry crossing — the road changes, the principles don't 24:37 — Demonstration in dense Bangkok traffic — blocking position under real pressure 38:08 — Debrief & Conclusion 🗺️ FILMING LOCATIONS: Filmed across three distinct environments — Bang Kachao (narrow rural roads, no lane markings, blind corners), the Chao Phraya River ferry crossing, and Bangkok city traffic on Sukhumvit Road. Two completely different road environments. One set of principles. The same Road Craft applies everywhere. 🎯 WHO THIS IS FOR: Beginner riders transitioning from the car park to real traffic Returning riders who have developed bad habits without realising it Experienced riders who've never had formal instruction on lane positioning Anyone riding in Bangkok, Thailand, or any high-density urban traffic environment Travellers renting scooters in Southeast Asia 🚦 ROAD CRAFT SERIES — WATCH IN ORDER: ✅ Part 1 — Lane Position | Where to Ride & Why (this video) ⏭ Part 2 — Lane Filtering | When It's Safe (And When It's Not) ⏭ Part 3 — Intersection Positions | Turning Left & Right Safely ⏭ Part 4 — Group Riding | Formation, Signals & Safety ⏭ Part 5 — Your First Highway Ride | Before Faster Roads 📌 PLAYLIST: Road Craft | Real-World Scooter Skills [playlist link] 👨‍🏫 ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: I'm Luke Watson, a qualified motorcycle and truck riding instructor.
