In this episode, I sat down with Murtaza Wahab, Mayor of Karachi, for an unfiltered conversation on how one of the world’s largest and most complex cities’ finances work. The objective of the conversation is to purely understand the revenue drivers and the costs. We unpack the broken structure of municipal governance, Karachi’s fragmented tax system, and the reforms the city needs to increase its tax collection. Murtaza shares what’s being done to fix it—from digitizing KMC’s payrolls and plugging revenue leaks, to rethinking how water, parks, and public spaces are managed. This conversation offers an inside look into the machinery of city leadership—its limitations, its potential, and the bold decisions required to push it forward. One of my primary motivations for starting a podcast was to have conversations that are not just politics, unlike most other Pakistani content. I love Karachi and am hopeful of the promise it holds, so I wanted to understand how the city can become self-sustainable, without getting into the typical political blame game.
