■ KBS Founding Anniversary Special - Sacred Objects Part 3: The Word ▶ O Allah, My Merciful and Compassionate! The day in Istanbul, the heart of Turkey, begins with the ‘Adhan,’ a call to prayer directed toward Allah. As the praise of God, which awakens the sleeping city, resounds, people offer prayers toward Mecca, where the Word was delivered. The Word conveyed by Allah through the Prophet Muhammad does not remain confined to books; it becomes sound and rhythm, permeating the daily lives of Muslims. To Muslims, the Word is the guiding principle of life and the immortal truth. “The Quran is the essence of Islam, and we live according to the Quran.” Benjamin Topçu Oğlu, Imam of Hagia Sophia ▶ Believers, seek help through patience and prayer (Quran 2:153) Eighteen-year-old Aziz is a boy out of school. Every day, he works part-time at a kebab shop and returns home late at night, dragging his exhausted body. Even amidst his busy daily life, Aziz never ceases his recitation of the Quran and prayer. However, his faith was not always the same as it is now. In the past, Aziz was a devout Muslim, even attending an Islamic seminary. Yet, the violence he experienced at school and his parents' divorce shattered his life in an instant. He clung to God, and at the same time, he resented Him. It seemed as though no answer to his prayers could be heard. “I resented God. Why does He always inflict pain? Why is it always me... Why does He not love me?” It is the holy night when the revelations of the Quran, the word of God, are delivered. Muslims believe that praying on the ‘Night of Qadr’ brings grace more valuable than performing a thousand days of prayer. Wanting to get rid of the long-held feelings of anger and hatred that had dominated his school days, Aziz visited the religious counseling center at the mosque after the night prayers ended. The Imam at the center empathizes with Aziz’s pain and offers comfort based on the teachings of the Quran. “Suffering is a process of discipline given by God. If you can endure and overcome this pain, Allah will bestow great grace upon you.” Amidst his wandering and conflict, it was the words of the Quran, imbued with God’s love, that held Aziz’s hand. The God within the Quran spoke to Aziz of love, brotherhood, sharing, and goodness. On his journey of faith to reclaim God’s love, Aziz learns Islamic Sufism—following Allah through mystical rituals—and encounters the freedom of the Alevi, a minority sect that rejects convention. In the Alevi chapel, where people of all genders and races sing, dance, and pray together, Aziz pours out his pent-up sorrow and pain through tears. Will Aziz truly be able to stop his long wandering and fully recover his faith?
