«Суд присяжных в романе Л.Н. Толстого „Воскресение“». Лекция юриста Сергея Пашина
The Great Judicial Reform of 1864, which followed the abolition of serfdom and the equalization of social classes before the law, was accompanied by a reorganization of the Russian judicial system, the creation of jury trials, the institutions of justices of the peace and investigating magistrates, and the legal profession. The public's enthusiastic reaction to these innovations was tempered by the routine activities of judicial officials and the protective tendencies of the conservative government. The jury trial became a central element of Russian public life. It attracted the attention of prominent statesmen, thinkers, and artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. This lecture explores the achievements and challenges of the Russian jury trial and how they are reflected in Leo Tolstoy's novel "Resurrection." A commonplace case of a merchant's poisoning and the fate of the convicted Katyusha Maslova will illuminate the basis for the writer's critical view of the criminal justice system of Imperial Russia, as well as compare the author's views with the current state of Russian justice. The relevance of this ancient history will be discussed in a lecture given not by a literary scholar, but by a lawyer. Lecturer: Sergey Pashin, Professor of the Law Faculty of the Moscow School of Social and Economic Sciences (Shaninka), PhD in Law, retired federal judge, and Honored Lawyer of the Russian Federation.
