Profitable sources will last for 19 years, but this threshold will be constantly pushed back as technologies develop, he said in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta. Energy expert and editor-in-chief of the Geoenergetika publication Boris Martsinkevich recalled in an interview for Zhurnalistskaya Pravda that several new large deposits have been discovered in the last year alone. In addition, technologies are being developed that make it possible to extract hydrocarbon reserves that were previously inaccessible. “The figure of 58 years is only fair if technological development stops completely. In practice, there are no reasons to stop this work. It is enough to recall the results of Gazpromneft's work at the Bazhenov technology center, in which 18 Russian research institutes, including a division of Rosatom, are participating. According to last year's results, the cost of oil production from the Bazhenov formation, which, according to the International Energy Agency, contains about two hundred billion tons, was about $15 per barrel. The final goal of the technology center is to increase the cost to $8 per barrel. It is also necessary to take into account the work in the Achimov strata [layers located in the lower part of the Cretaceous deposits almost directly above the Bazhenov formation (a group of rocks in Western Siberia, located at depths of two to three to four kilometers) - editor's note], which is being carried out by Gazprom together with Wintershall Dea. I can endlessly list the areas of work of Russian companies with hard-to-recover reserves. Nobody stops: Lukoil works with viscous oil, Tatneft works with super-viscous oil, and so on. The current level of technology is not some constant that will never change. More than a dozen companies are working on developing technologies in Russia. Work is underway on all of our hard-to-recover reserves.
