Thailands Tourism Boom is Changing Chiang Mai 🇹🇭

In 2019, Kalare Night Market in Chiang Mai felt alive. The narrow walkways were packed with vendors, local food stalls, live music, handmade crafts, nightlife, and travelers from around the world. It was more than just a tourist attraction. It was part of the atmosphere and identity that made Chiang Mai unique. Returning in 2025, I discovered a very different environment. Large sections of the market have changed as redevelopment projects connected to the Lannatique initiative and Asset World Corporation (AWC) continue reshaping the area. Vendors have been relocated, temporary market zones have appeared, and parts of the old night bazaar atmosphere now feel uncertain and transitional. This documentary explores the transformation of Kalare Night Market through firsthand observations, archival footage, environmental comparisons, and conversations gathered while spending time within the local community. Rather than attacking redevelopment itself, this video examines the larger question many cities around the world are now facing: How do places modernize without losing the culture, atmosphere, and identity that originally made them meaningful? From Bangkok to Bali, Sri Lanka, Vietnam… similar transformations are happening everywhere. And as Chiang Mai continues evolving, many are left wondering what parts of the old spirit will remain alongside the new.
