Foundations: The Sinai Event—After years of slavery in Egypt, the Israelites are on their way back to the land God promised them. However, they have lost their connection and understanding of who God is. Here he reintroduces himself to them and makes a powerful covenant with them. They are to be holy and become a kingdom of priests. This gave them both personal access to God and a responsibility to represent him to the world. How does it change your view of God to think of Him as a "covenant maker" rather than just someone who gives rules? In what ways do you see God actively pursuing a relationship with you in your daily life? What does the word "holiness" mean to you, and why do you think it is the appropriate response to encountering God? How do you reconcile the idea of God being holy and powerful with the fact that He desires a personal relationship with you? What does it look like in practical terms to act as a "representative" of God to the people around you? What has helped you or hindered you in feeling like you have personal access to God? If God were to reintroduce Himself to you today, what aspect of His character do you think you need to be reminded of most? How can we, as a group, support one another in living out this dual identity of having personal access to God and the responsibility to represent Him?
