Winter begins this Sunday, June 21st, and meteorologists predict a season marked by extreme weather in several regions of Brazil. Despite the drop in temperatures, the cold in the Southern Region should not be as persistent as that recorded in May, due to the higher frequency of rainfall. In July, two new masses of cold air should advance across the country. In addition to the Southern Region, they may cause lower temperatures in areas of the Southeast, Midwest, as well as Acre, Rondônia, and southern Amazonas. But winter should also include periods of intense heat. With the advance of El Niño, meteorologists are warning of the possibility of heat waves at the end of the season. Regions such as Goiás, the Federal District, Mato Grosso, Tocantins, Maranhão, Piauí, and western Bahia are among the areas at greatest risk. In August and September, the heat may intensify even further, affecting parts of the Central-West, Southeast, North, and Northeast regions. The phenomenon should also alter the rainfall patterns in the country. Above-average rainfall is expected throughout the Southern Region, especially in southwestern Paraná. São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul may also experience more rain than normal for this time of year. In the Southeast and Central-West, regions that normally face a dry period during the winter, the expectation is for episodes of unusual rainfall throughout the season. On the other hand, the Northeast should maintain typical winter characteristics, with predominantly hot and dry weather. In the coastal strip of the region, rainfall may be below average between July and September. In the North of the country, states like Roraima, Amapá, northern Amazonas, and northern Pará are also expected to experience less rainfall than normal in the coming months.
