Bale Grazing... with Ratchet Straps

Bale Grazing... with Ratchet Straps Before I say anything on this topic, I want to throw out a disclaimer. Everyone's context is different. What works for me might not work for you. What works on one of my properties does not work on another. Everyone's situation and conditions are different, and it is up to each of us to find that sweet spot. I'm just sharing what is currently working for me, hoping to help someone or spark creativity for more solutions. This is my most recent iteration of bale grazing on my lease. It was born out of several factors... My fold does not tolerate hay rings, and they're just not realistic or economical past a certain scale. Cattle with horns and hay rings don't mix well I love to unroll hay and lay a carpet on the pasture floor, but I'm also on a budget and on leased property with an unknown expiration date That budget means that I need to stretch my hay supply as far as possible. Only a certain amount of "waste" is acceptable Unrolling hay is also a lot of manual labor. I don't own a machine to unroll hay everyday, not to mention this property is miles away from the home farm, so sharing/driving equipment isn't going to happen Simply setting the bales out as whole, individual bales isn't really an option either. My bulls and older cows will roll and flip them right out of the paddock, or worse, down the big hill and out onto the road So my challenge is to bale graze without equipment, hay rings, or unrolling hay all while operating on a budget, and stretching the hay supply as far as possible. I have 2.0 and 3.0 versions of this in my back pocket that I'd like to try. But for now, this will do. I'd love to hear about everyone's bale grazing ingenuity in the comments. Tell us how YOU do it!
