Neighbour talks about Adel Kermiche's past

(26 Jul 2016) A man who claimed to be the neighbour of one of the attackers who killed a priest in northern France on Tuesday, told reporters that as soon as he heard about the attack "he knew it was him." Eighteen-year-old Redwan, who didn't give his last name, told the Associated Press that he was a neighbour of Adel Kermiche and also went to school with him. Redwan said he knew all about Kermiche's attempts to go to Syria and said Kermiche had talked about travelling there to "fight for our brothers". He said that Kermiche had tried to "indoctrinate" him and others but they didn't take it seriously. Kermiche was a 19-year-old who grew up in the town of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray and tried to travel to Syria twice last year using family members' identity documents, but was arrested outside France and handed preliminary terrorism charges. Kermiche was put under house arrest with an electronic surveillance bracelet after a judge overruled prosecutors and agreed to free him, French prosecutor Francois Molins said. However, the bracelet was deactivated for a few hours every morning as part of the surveillance agreement, Molins said - hours that corresponded to the time of Tuesday's attack. Kermiche and another attacker were killed by police on Tuesday as they rushed from the church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray shouting "Allahu Akbar," according to officials.
