The Owl Mountains are a region most associate with a harsh, forested climate and wartime secrets hidden within the rocks. Few, however, know that this picturesque spot can transform in a matter of moments, transporting us straight to the atmosphere of European salons. Did you know that the monumental Spa House in Szczawno-Zdrój inspired the builders of the famous Grand Hotel in Sopot? This extraordinary blend of wild nature, medieval gems, and spa architecture creates a unique microclimate that teaches us about Lower Silesia anew each time. We begin our route at Lake Bielawskie, where the peaks towering above the water create a spectacular panorama. This massive reservoir is actually a work of human hand – it was created as a technological reservoir for former textile mills, and today it serves as a brilliant, natural gateway to the Sowiogórski Landscape Park. Right next to it, we arrive at Góra Parkowa. Although the hill is less than 450 meters high, the steel observation tower offers stunning views, perfectly capturing Bielawa nestled against a green mountain ridge. Continuing around the lake, we reach further viewpoints, a true photographer's paradise, offering the crisp scent of an owl's forest that instantly refreshes the mind. Then we move on to Owiesno, where an absolute rarity awaits us – the ruins of a fourteenth-century castle built on a circular plan, a rarity in Silesia. Just a few dozen meters from the castle walls stands the Church of St. Trinity Church, whose Gothic roots and Baroque modifications perfectly complement the somewhat sleepy, mysterious atmosphere of the Lower Silesian countryside. The next stop on the route is Sierpnica, where we arrive to see the 18th-century, larch-framed Church of Our Lady of the Snows – a rare sight of a shingled structure in a region dominated by stone. Changing scenery, we drive along winding roads to Michałkowa, where we admire the picturesque Church of St. Anne, picturesquely situated on a steep hill, with its distinctive half-timbered structure (so-called "half-timbered"). The real change of scenery, however, comes at the end, reaching Szczawno-Zdrój, where we land for the first time in our lives. Strolling through Spa Park and passing charming tenement houses, we are transported to the days when the resort hosted European elite, including Henryk Wieniawski and Winston Churchill. The Larch Walking Hall, connected to the Mineral Water Pump Room, is an absolute architectural masterpiece that seamlessly leads us to the monumental Spa House. This colossus, built at the initiative of Prince John Henry XV von Pless, captivates us with its splendor to this day. The crowning glory of a walk through the park is the neo-Gothic Anna Tower from the first half of the 19th century – the spa's oldest observation point, which looks as if it were straight out of a romantic tale. Parking: You'll find public and convenient parking at most of the attractions described (Lake Bielawskie, Góra Parkowa, and Szczawno-Zdrój). Time and Difficulty: The ascent to Góra Parkowa and the walks around the ruins in Owiesno are short and undemanding – perfect for a peaceful, regenerating weekend. Architecture: The route is rich in unique religious monuments, from the wooden shingles in Sierpnica to the half-timbered structure in Michałkowa, making it a treat for history buffs.
